The Affordable Care Act (ACA) can be confusing, so here are the basics:

1. There are no pre-existing condition restrictions on QHPs. You cannot be turned down, or pay higher premiums due to any medical condition.

2. Depending on income and family size, you may qualify for a subsidy to help pay your monthly premium

3. All Qualified Health Plans have a deductible and a limit on out-of-pocket expenses. Those that qualify for a subsidy may also have reduced copays, deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket expenses.

4. You have to decide what level of coverage you want. Generally, the higher the level of coverage, the more expensive the policy.

The levels of coverage are broken down in metallic levels:

  • Platinum Level covers 90% of your medical expenses
  • Gold Level covers 80% of your medical expenses
  • Silver Level covers 70% of your medical expenses
  • Bronze Level covers 60% of your medical expenses
  • Some applicants can qualify for Catastrophic Level coverage

5. Any qualifying health plan under the ACA must, at a minimum, provide the following services:

  • Ambulatory patient services
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization
  • Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care
  • Mental health and substance use disorder services
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
  • Laboratory services
  • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
  • Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
  • Birth control coverage
  • Breastfeeding coverage
